Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is key to escaping poverty. That is a key reason why it is a priority goal as part of the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals. Over the past decade, major progress has been made towards increasing access to education and school enrolment rates at all levels, particularly for girls. Since 2000, there has been enormous progress in achieving the target of universal primary education. The total enrolment rate in developing regions reached 91 percent in 2015, and the worldwide number of children out of school has dropped by almost half. Progress has also been tough in some developing regions due to high levels of poverty, armed conflicts, and other emergencies.

The problem is also very much alive in the UK, with children from the poorest households being up to four times more likely to be out of school than those from the richest households. Achieving inclusive and quality education for all reaffirms the belief that education is one of the most powerful and proven vehicles for sustainable development. It also aims to provide equal access to affordable vocational training, to eliminate gender and wealth disparities, and achieve universal access to quality higher education.

Centre for Sustainability offers a range of research and advisory services in the area of educations from specialist advice, to supporting and monitoring the delivery of plans and policies in the area of education and development.
